CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Lennox sagged with relief. The interaction between Osric and Ailis could’ve gone a hundred different ways. He’d held out hope, but when Osric shifted, Lennox had been worried things would go sideways.

He met Osric’s eyes. The color change was different. He looked nothing like the black dragon Lennox had always known, but then again, Lennox also appeared different from his true form. And while he liked that Osric and Ailis could speak directly to each other, it didn’t alleviate his growing concerns that all the dragons might shift around her.

Because it was Ailis that’d caused the change. It had to be. She was the only common factor.

Lennox held Ailis’s gaze as she searched his face. She looked from him to Osric. Lennox wished he knew what she was thinking. She kept it to herself. Neither speaking her mind nor posing questions. And that worried him.

“What is it?” he pressed.

She sighed as she dragged her gaze back to him. “How long have dragons lived on this realm?”

“Eons,” Osric answered before he could.

Ailis red eyes briefly lowered to Lennox’s chest. “In all that time, you’re saying no dragon has mated outside their clan?”

“Aye,” Lennox reluctantly replied.

Ailis smoothed her hands down his chest and pulled out of his arms. “I’m happy that Osric is willing to help, but I fear nothing will change.”

“It’s time for a change,” Osric stated. “It’s been time. Other Kings in Lennox’s position have no’ had the courage to put anything in action. Lennox is motivated like none before him.”

Lennox nodded. “He’s right.”

“How resistant will the other Kings be?” she asked.

Lennox shrugged. “We’re divided. I’ve sent them back to their clans to think about both sides. In the meantime, I’m going to talk to the two who wish to be mated.”

“The best option is for Lennox to create another clan. One where any dragon from any clan can join if they wish to mate outside their clan. Or if they just want to leave their clan,” Osric explained.

Ailis’s brows snapped together. “I thought the clans took care of their own.”

“They do, for the most part,” Lennox told her.

Osric shrugged. “The clan is a large family. At times, someone doesna feel as if they fit in, or there is an argument. It doesna happen often, but it does occur.”

“My father left his family because he fell in love with my mother.” Ailis sat on a rock. “Mum’s family banished her. They had no one.”

Osric’s brows rose as he nodded. “Exactly! Things happen. Another clan is the best solution.”

“Can you make a new clan?” Ailis asked Lennox.

He shrugged as he crossed his arms over his chest. “I have the power to do it, aye.”

“You might have the authority, but so did other Kings of Kings. Why didn’t they set something up?”

He glanced at Osric. “There are many reasons.”

“Lennox,” she said softly when he didn’t explain.

She would keep pushing until she got an answer. There was no use beating around the bush. He might as well tell her now. “Because it would disrupt the order of things.
