CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE
Lennox sagged with relief. The interaction between Osric and Ailis couldâve gone a hundred different ways. Heâd held out hope, but when Osric shifted, Lennox had been worried things would go sideways.
He met Osricâs eyes. The color change was different. He looked nothing like the black dragon Lennox had always known, but then again, Lennox also appeared different from his true form. And while he liked that Osric and Ailis could speak directly to each other, it didnât alleviate his growing concerns that all the dragons might shift around her.
Because it was Ailis thatâd caused the change. It had to be. She was the only common factor.
Lennox held Ailisâs gaze as she searched his face. She looked from him to Osric. Lennox wished he knew what she was thinking. She kept it to herself. Neither speaking her mind nor posing questions. And that worried him.
âWhat is it?â he pressed.
She sighed as she dragged her gaze back to him. âHow long have dragons lived on this realm?â
âEons,â Osric answered before he could.
Ailis red eyes briefly lowered to Lennoxâs chest. âIn all that time, youâre saying no dragon has mated outside their clan?â
âAye,â Lennox reluctantly replied.
Ailis smoothed her hands down his chest and pulled out of his arms. âIâm happy that Osric is willing to help, but I fear nothing will change.â
âItâs time for a change,â Osric stated. âItâs been time. Other Kings in Lennoxâs position have noâ had the courage to put anything in action. Lennox is motivated like none before him.â
Lennox nodded. âHeâs right.â
âHow resistant will the other Kings be?â she asked.
Lennox shrugged. âWeâre divided. Iâve sent them back to their clans to think about both sides. In the meantime, Iâm going to talk to the two who wish to be mated.â
âThe best option is for Lennox to create another clan. One where any dragon from any clan can join if they wish to mate outside their clan. Or if they just want to leave their clan,â Osric explained.
Ailisâs brows snapped together. âI thought the clans took care of their own.â
âThey do, for the most part,â Lennox told her.
Osric shrugged. âThe clan is a large family. At times, someone doesna feel as if they fit in, or there is an argument. It doesna happen often, but it does occur.â
âMy father left his family because he fell in love with my mother.â Ailis sat on a rock. âMumâs family banished her. They had no one.â
Osricâs brows rose as he nodded. âExactly! Things happen. Another clan is the best solution.â
âCan you make a new clan?â Ailis asked Lennox.
He shrugged as he crossed his arms over his chest. âI have the power to do it, aye.â
âYou might have the authority, but so did other Kings of Kings. Why didnât they set something up?â
He glanced at Osric. âThere are many reasons.â
âLennox,â she said softly when he didnât explain.
She would keep pushing until she got an answer. There was no use beating around the bush. He might as well tell her now. âBecause it would disrupt the order of things.
